Study Questions for Personal or Group Use
•Read panels 1-2. Have you talked with someone who used biblical words such as Jesus, salvation, and faith, but seemed to mean something else? According to Scripture, what did Jesus' death accomplish? On panel 2, three different examples are given of false gospels. How do these false gospels try to make Jesus' death less important?
•Read #2 False Doctrines. What does the Bible say about itself and the reliability of its doctrines? What common ways do cultic groups try to introduce their own teachings into Scripture?
•Read #3 False Gods. God is not a force field or an idea of goodness. The Bible is clear who God is - and that he exists as the Trinity. How does this contrast with the false gods mentioned in this section?
•Read #4 False Christs. Most cults try to deny or diminish Christ's deity (the fact that he is God). Read the biblical description of Jesus and compare it to the common twists that some new religious movements use. What questions would you ask a person to determine if their view of Jesus Christ is biblical or not?
•Read #5 False Spirits. In Jesus' time and during the first century church, messages claiming to be from the spirits were very common. They are today too. Christians were required to test all spirits with some simple questions. Look at the tests in the last paragraph. If someone came to you claiming to have a message from an angel or spirit guide or oracle, what would you do?
•Read #6 False Prophets. Look at the examples of “prophets” who claimed to have the one true religion. They convinced many intelligent people of their day. Scripture says false prophets look good and harmless. It is impossible to tell by their appearance. Many have vibrant personalities and act very devout—convincing people they are more committed to Christ than others. How can you tell the difference?
•Read #7 False Apostles. How are apostles different from prophets? Why are so-called modern-day apostles a contradiction to Scriptural teaching?
•Read #8 False Teachers. The Lord holds teachers accountable for what they teach. They are to teach the truth even if it is not popular. Compare the examples of false teachers with the true teachers. Why is a lie so appealing to people?
•Read #9 False Visions. In the western countries, visions are not taken as seriously as they are in the Middle East. Today people in other countries report that they have chosen to follow Jesus Christ as a result of dreams or visions. Scripture indicates that there can be true visions and false visions. How can you tell the difference?
•Read #10 False Miracles. People who are desperate for healing are vulnerable to false miracle workers. Not all miracles are false. God does heal people, but there are reports of people who do miracles for money or power. The Bible says that false miracles are so convincing that often Christians will be duped. How can you tell the difference between a genuine healing and a “magic trick” or a fraudulent faith healer?
•Read the back page (panel 7). How would you apply this wise advice to a friend, neighbor, or co-worker who you fear might be getting into a strange sect or cult? Why is it so important to listen to the person and ask questions before coming to a conclusion?
